Meet the Judge

Meet the judge for this years art competition & exhibition, "Collusion", Tony Nicholls.

Born and raised in New Plymouth, won the Bernard Aris Art Award for painting in 1974. I graduated from Otago School of art in the early 80s majoring in sculpture. In the eighties I made steel sculpture and in then started making acoustic guitars. I did Postgrad studies at Wintec with First class Honours and Masters with Distinction. At this time my sculptures investigated the reality we overlook, and my current work continues this investigation making kinetic sound sculptures based on Infrasound. I have had numerous one man and group shows nationally. A highlight for me was a show Double Harmonic with Len Lye at the Govett Brewster. My work has also been toured in China as part of the Blue Roof project. My last show was at Ramp Gallery last year. I have won Kinetica in New Plymouth and been a finalist in the National contemporary Art Award five times and judged the National Number Eight Field-days award. I work at Wintec in the Media Arts department where I’ve been for the last 25 years.
